DUAL MONITORS

If you don't have a dual monitor setup as your main workstation, why not? There are many advantages to having a dual monitor setup, such as:

  1. Increased productivity. Research consistently shows that more screen space leads to faster task completion.
  2. Simultaneous applications. You can keep your email or reference materials open on one screen while working on your main project on the other.
  3. Ease of use. Despite looking high tech, these systems are remarkably simple to operate once configured.

Before you plug anything in, you need to check your hardware. Take a look at the back of your monitor and your computer tower or laptop to see what ports are available. Common connections include:

  1. HDMI: the most common modern standard for high-definition video.
  2. Display Port often found on high-end monitors and professional workstations.
  3. VGA: an older analog connection usually found on legacy equipment.

If your computer only has one HDMI port but your monitor uses display port, don't panic. You may simply need to pick up a hardware adapter to bridge the gap. Once you have the right cables, plug both monitors into your computer's video outputs. If your mouse doesn't move seamlessly from one screen to the other immediately, it usually means your software settings need a quick tweak.

To get your screens talking to each other correctly, follow these steps:

  1. Open settings.  Navigate to the search bar at the bottom of your screen, search for display settings, and select it.
  2. Identify your screens. Click the identify button. Numbers will appear on your physical screen so you know which is one and which is two.
  3. Rearrange. In the settings menu, you will see boxes representing your monitors. If they aren't in the right order, simply drag and drop them to match their physical position on your desk.

Move your mouse across the border of your screen. If it transitions smoothly, you're all set!
